Antisocial personality disorder is not a new phenomena. For centuries, people both rich and poor, successful, unsuccessful, praised and despised could be diagnosed as being a sociopath. Antisocial personality disorder is a type of chronic mental condition in which a person s ways of thinking, perceiving situations and relating to others are dysfunctional, and destructive. There are two major types of psychological disorders. Antisocial personality disorder and Borderline personality disorder. They do share some of the same symptoms so diagnosis could be difficult. Anger, self-control issues, and frequent emotional outbursts are the most documented commonalities. (Licht, Hull, Ballantyne, n.d.) But where people with Borderline disorders are more prone to self-deprivation, antisocial behavior sufferers tend to affect others directly with their behavior. Some of the symptoms more specific to a sociopath include disregard of typical morals, persistent exploitation or manipulation for personal gain or sheer personal pleasure, repeated use of intimidation, dishonesty and misrepresentation, hostility, impulsiveness, aggression. Violent or poor and abusive relationships, both past and present, also seems to be a common theme in subjects with both disorders. John Proctor then started challenging the court because of its lack of evidence this led to a petition signed by 32 neighbors in his favor. He was tried and found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging. Proctor was executed on mid-august of 1692. As he stood on the scaffold he recited the Lord ’s Prayer. This shows how John’s actions support the quote because although It didn’t end happily he tried proving he was right and succeed because him praying made a drastic impression on the villagers as those convicted of witchcraft were not supposed to be able to perform such act. In The Crucible Abigail Williams is Samuel Parris, the minister’s niece. Her and her cousin Betty where the first two accusers. Williams was 11 years old at the time. Everything started when all the girls were at the woods and Abigail was trying to put a spell on Elizabeth Proctor, since her health was already delicate. Her purpose was to keep John Proctor to herself. She had become obsessed with him after their affair and couldn’t seem to get over him. While doing witchcraft in the woods they get caught. After that they started faking being bewitched. They all start accusing people saying they’ve seen them with the devil. Because of Abigail and Betty’s claims to be possessed, false accusations would soon be made resulting in the death of 20 people and 3 women were arrested, including Tituba, Parris’s slave and two other women who one was hanged and the other died in prison. This demonstrates how Abigail’s cruelty knew no boundaries. She didn’t mind innocent people being killed just to hide the fact that she was the one attempting witchcraft in the woods. Abigail went through all that to keep her reputation and be seen as the victim, and she excelled. Personal Story A Fighting Chance Essay It all started on Christmas Day, I went to my friend’s house wondering what he received. When I approached the door an ominous chill went down my spine. When I knocked on the door my friend Ricky answered he said Hey Elvis how was your Christmas? I said pretty cool what did you guys get? ’ He said I got a soccer ball but my brothers got airsoft guns. (At this point none of us had our own airsoft gun so this was a great thing. ) I did not realize it at his point but this was the beginning of a journey with his brothers, enslavement, and rebellion. Rickys brothers were two larger boys named Felipe and Kevin, both of them receiving an automatic airsoft gun, which to a young boy he was an amazing yet very frightening thing. Seeing as these two had abused us in the past in an older brother way. So Felipe and Kevin come out with their guns and then to our horror they started shooting at us. So we started running away now they were older, faster, and stronger than us so we did not get very far. So for the next three months every time I went over there he would have to take off our shirts, and get down on the ground and pick up airsoft BBs that they shot around. Now if we had refused to do this they would shoot us on the spot and we would not be allowed to go inside. We would have to work out there for about an hour or two a day before we got to go inside to do anything, so times like this were very unpleasant. As a kid I was bored often, so one of the only things to do was go to Rickys house. Most of the time Ricky did not want to come to my house because there was not really much to do. Thinking back on it having him come to my house would be a much less painful and probably more enjoyable thing, but in a way we were sort of having fun with the whole airsoft slave thing. So as the days went on me and Ricky would hang out, work and as soon as that ended we would be able to go inside and play on his Wii or stay outside and play soccer with his new ball. Thankfully the airsoft guns ran on batteries which his brothers did not have the greatest supply of, so occasionally they would run out and we would have a day without the work but these were few and far between. One day when we are working and Felipe and Kevin had a friend come over. Now there were three of them, Ricky and I were in a particularly annoyed mood at this time so I decided that I didnt want to work today so I started to go home, now on my way Felipe and Kevin stopped me they said ‘no you have to keep working for another 20 minutes. ’ To that I replied ‘I do not want to Im going home. ’ So they took up positions and were about to shoot at me, when Ricky came around back and tackled Kevin so I grabbed Felipe’s gun and started shooting the both of them. Being older they had a higher pain tolerance and this didnt really affect them too much. We did not remember however their friend, who came up behind both of us and start shooting at us, so we ran and had Felipe and Kevins guns and we had to fight their friend Mike. Felipe and Kevin decided to sit back and watching at this point to see what was going on. Mike had a much stronger and larger gun so we were very afraid. We ran into the, woods next to his house, climbed up a tree and waiting for him. Poison gas could be used when the soldiers wanted to knock out a large amount of people without having to do much. Gun shots from a machine gun were more common but using the gas put the soldiers in more pain which the army liked. Soldiers would have to put on simple gas masks and if these were unsuccessful, an attack could leave a victim in agony for days and weeks before he finally gave up on his injuries. It was found that the ammonia in the pad neutralized the chlorine. These pads were held over the face until the soldiers could escape from the poisonous fumes. The Struggle for Peace and Politics Essay The documentary â€Å"Peace One Day† is the brainchild of British filmmaker Jeremy Gilley, a compelling film that has envisioned a world without war even for a day. In the process of conceiving the final output of his documentary, Gilley met with people from all walks of life—state leaders, students, religious figures and many others. Gilley’s encounters with the many different people from different cultural backgrounds indicate that the world is indeed a bastion of different. But even though there is a plurality of cultures and political beliefs across the world, Gilley’s documentary is a testimony to the idea that we still have the same yearning for global peace. Part of the documentary is Gilley’s encounters with several leaders of democratic countries as well as the members of the United Nations. Given the fact that the United Nations seeks to protect the rule of law and the rights of individuals across different countries, it can be said that the liberal principles of the international organization fitted well with the vision of Gilley to have global peace at least for one day. Indeed, it would be, as it has been, the least of all the challenges that lay ahead of him. The more pressing concern with the documentary was the fact that even though the rest of the world wants peace, there are many ways used in meeting that end. One of the compelling ways to achieve peace has been the waging of wars across different parts of the world, especially after the September 11 bombing attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. Several political insights can be gleaned from the documentary such as the issues of globalization, terrorism and peacekeeping within the different states. The fact that the United Nations listened to the message of the documentary and even supported the dissemination of the film in different parts of world suggests that the United Nations still maintains a significant consideration for individual rights in the context of the larger society. By fully supporting the message of the documentary—which is to imagine a day where the world is at peace and make that thought materialize in reality—it can be said that there is still hope in global politics. No matter how severely divided nations may appear, the leaders from each of these nations can still arrive at an agreement that, indeed, there is that ultimate need for world peace. The move of the United Nations also indicates that no matter if you are a leader of a country that is financially torn or a leader of a nation that is struggling to maintain its wealth and its relations with other countries, not one leader can resist the need for world peace. The issues of peacekeeping and terrorism have strongly resounded more than before. With that in mind, the documentary easily hits the nail hard—the post 9/11 world has never been the same again, and a documentary film highlighting the need to transcend political affiliations in order to grab the beacon of peace fits perfectly well into the mold. However, it can also be said that the same issues of peacekeeping and terrorism hinder the documentary from reaching the awareness of the public in a global scale. The fact that there are many languages and cultural factors which largely influence the political thought of various individuals implies that the main medium of the message—the English language—may likewise limit the ‘reach’ of the documentary. Some others may even stretch the argument that the documentary is just another form of Western expansion under the guise of the claim for a world peace day. That is, by allowing the documentary to penetrate the collective consciousness of non-Westerners, the documentary in effect influences the thinking of the ‘natives’ of foreign countries, thereby altering the ways in which they think about their respective countries. The seeds of the Professional Air Traffic Controller (PATCO) strike were sown long before the strike began on August 3, 1981. PATCO was founded in 1968, and from the beginnings of the union, its members hoped to improve their current work situation under the FAA. It is important to note that as a union composed of federal employees, PATCO was not allowed to go on strike or else suffer civil and criminal penalties. Between 1970 and 1980 PATCO was under the leadership of union president John F. Leyden, during this time PATCO made significant gains. Leyden’s leadership actively encouraged cooperation with the FAA and discouraged illegal acts by PATCO members. In 1980, Robert Poli became the new president of PATCO. Poli held radically different views than Leyden, he favored a militant approach to negotiations with the FAA. He believed that the system would be nearly impossible to run without PATCO. On August 3, 1981 after 7 months of unsuccessful bargaining approxim ately 12,500 of PATCO’s 17,500 employees went on strike. An outraged President Reagan ordered the strikers to return to work or be permanently banned from any form of future federal employment. Following this threat 11,350 PATCO workers gave up their jobs (Shostak, 2009). On August 17, 1981 the FAA began hiring new workers (Schalch). PATCO struggled to survive into 1982. During the first day, nothing of great interest seemed to happen. I was quoted by a girl in the afternoon as having ‘big legs that way’ while being gestured to the sky and I discovered the route to the staff room but other than that I seemed to have settled into the working habit pretty quickly. By the time I got home I was exhausted. I felt like I had run a marathon even though the working day was only half an hour longer than a school day and I had taken part in no physical activity. Mum claimed that being with children was much more difficult than people realized. It certainly opened my eyes to the teachers around me that have to deal with us every day! As the week wore on I found myself almost enjoying the effortless days yet also wishing I had slightly more to do. I always got the feeling from my two supervisors that they had done this job for so many years that they felt they didn’t need me. I felt that I was continually offering my help but not to any great success. As lazy as I am though, I guess it was almost my perfect two weeks as I soon learnt that a staff training day was due on the Friday and a strike was happening the next Monday. An eight day fortnight, wonderful! My worst moment was during the first week when a certain boy nearly emptied his stomach contents over my leg at the same time that a boy expected me to clean his ‘accident’ up. When three other teachers were in the room I felt it almost typical that all the drama happened to me, the only individual who didn’t have a clue what to do! Mrs Rusha was very nice, though, and offered to help claiming this to be the norm. The greatest trouble I had was keeping my confidence up throughout the placement. Especially when conducting the interview as done in my work experience booklet. Talking to the staff during lunchtime was also quite difficult for me as I had to be careful about what I said so it didn’t backfire on my mum or the school. She had given me advice beforehand, though, and explained my responsibility so I knew to be cautious of what I said and did. The final day was definitely the one most likely to stay in my memory the longest. A ‘Sponsored Bounce’ had been set up in the hall and as I was the youngest student, with exception to the actual toddlers, I had the honour of going with them. This was an annual set up by the parents association of two large bouncy castles for every child in the school. Admist the cries of delight and some cries of complete fear from the toddlers you could faintly hear the sound of a six foot girl laughing hysterically. It was great fun and I eventually dragged the other teachers onto it so that everyone was enjoying themselves. I also got given an easter egg as a thank you which was touching for me as I’d felt I hadn’t actually done much. I hope my presence was valued by someone there and that I might have taught a child something they’ll never forget. The experience certainly taught me a lot, from helping me find out what teachers get up to outside the classroom to finding out how tough it really is for nurseries to deal with new Government issues all the time. (E. g. a new jollyphonics scheme must now be taught in every British nursery). I got a real insight into working with children and I found that although the children are different and exciting every day, the job isn’t. I couldn’t see myself becoming a nursery teacher as I need more challenges and a better chance of progression in my job. I absolutely admire teachers now and I’ve decided that a job concerning both children and sport could be something I’m really interested in. Major General Horatio Wright in the Civil War Horatio Wright - Early Life Career: Born at Clinton, CT on March 6, 1820, Horatio Gouverneur Wright was the son of Edward and Nancy Wright.   Initially educated in Vermont at former West Point Superintendent Alden Partridges military academy, Wright later gained an appointment to West Point in 1837.   Entering the academy, his classmates included John F. Reynolds, Don Carlos Buell, Nathaniel Lyon, and Richard Garnett.   A gifted student, Wright graduated ranked second of fifty-two in the class of 1841.   Receiving a commission in the Corps of Engineers, he remained at West Point as an assistant to the Board of Engineers and later as an instructor of French and engineering.   While there, he married Louisa Marcella Bradford of Culpeper, VA on August 11, 1842.   In 1846, with the Mexican-American War beginning, Wright received orders that directed him to aid in making harbor improvements at St. Augustine, FL.   Later working on the defenses at Key West, he spent most of the next decade engaged on various engineering projects.   Promoted to captain on July 1, 1855, Wright reported to Washington, DC where he acted as an assistant to Chief of Engineers Colonel Joseph Totten.   As sectional tensions increased after the election of President Abraham Lincoln in 1860, Wright was dispatched south to Norfolk the following April.   With the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter and beginning of the Civil War in April 1861, he unsuccessfully attempted to implement the destruction of the Gosport Navy Yard.   Captured in the process, Wright was released four days later. Horatio Wright - Early Days of the Civil War: Returning to Washington, Wright aided in the design and construction of fortifications around the capital until being posted to serve as chief engineer of Major General Samuel P. Heintzelmans 3rd Division.   Continuing to work on area fortifications from May to July, he then marched with Heintzelmans division in Brigadier General Irvin McDowells army against Manassas.   On July 21, Wright assisted his commander during the Union defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run.   A month later he received a promotion to major and on September 14 was elevated to brigadier general of volunteers.   Two months later, Wright led a brigade during Major General Thomas Sherman and Flag Officer Samuel F. Du Ponts successful capture of Port Royal, SC.   Having gained experience in combined army-navy operations, he continued in this role during operations against St. Augustine and Jacksonville in March 1862.   Moving to division command, Wright led part of Major General David Hunters army duri ng the Union defeat at the Battle of Secessionville (SC) on June 16. Horatio Wright - Department of the Ohio: In August 1862, Wright received a promotion to major general and command of the newly re-formed Department of the Ohio.   Establishing his headquarters at Cincinnati, he supported his classmate Buell during the campaign that culminated with the Battle of Perryville that October.   On March 12, 1863, Lincoln was forced to rescind Wrights promotion to major general as it had not been confirmed by the Senate.   Reduced to brigadier general, he lacked the rank to command a department and his post passed to Major General Ambrose Burnside.   After commanding the District of Louisville for a month, he transferred to Major General Joseph Hookers Army of the Potomac.   Arriving in May, Wright obtained command of the 1st Division in Major General John Sedgwicks VI Corps. Horatio Wright - In the East: Marching north with the army in pursuit of General Robert E. Lees Army of North Virginia, Wrights men were present at the Battle of Gettysburg in July but remained in a reserve position.   That fall, he played an active role in the Bristoe and Mine Run Campaigns.   For his performance in the former, Wright earned a brevet promotion to lieutenant colonel in the regular army.   Retaining command of his division following the reorganization of the army in the spring of 1864, Wright moved south in May as Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant advanced against Lee.   After leading his division during the Battle of the Wilderness, Wright assumed command of VI Corps when Sedgwick was killed on May 9 during the opening actions of the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House.   Quickly promoted to major general, this action was confirmed by the Senate on May 12. Settling into corps command, Wrights men participated in the Union defeat at Cold Harbor at the end of May.   Crossing the James River, Grant moved the army against Petersburg.   As Union and Confederate forces engaged north and east of the city, VI Corps received orders to move north to aid in defending Washington from Lieutenant General Jubal A. Earlys forces which had advanced down the Shenandoah Valley and won a victory at Monocacy.   Arriving on July 11, Wrights corps was quickly moved into the Washington defenses at Fort Stevens and aided in repelling Early.   During the fighting, Lincoln visited Wrights lines before being moved to a more protected location.   As the enemy withdrew on July 12, Wrights men mounted a brief pursuit. Horatio Wright - Shenandoah Valley Final Campaigns: To deal with Early, Grant formed the Army of the Shenandoah in August under Major General Philip H. Sheridan.   Attached to this command, Wrights VI Corps played key roles in the victories at Third Winchester, Fishers Hill, and Cedar Creek.   At Cedar Creek, Wright held command of the field for the early phases of the battle until Sheridan arrived from a meeting at Winchester.   Though Earlys command was effectively destroyed, VI Corps remained in the region until December when it moved back to the trenches at Petersburg.   In the line through the winter, VI Corps attacked Lieutenant General A.P. Hills men on April 2 when Grant mounted a massive offensive against the city.   Breaking through the  Boydton Line, VI Corps achieved some of the first penetrations of the enemys defenses.   Ã‚      Pursuing Lees retreating army west after the fall of Petersburg, Wright and VI Corps again came under the direction of Sheridan.   On April 6, VI Corps played a key role in the victory at Saylers Creek which also saw Union forces capture Lieutenant General Richard Ewell.   Pressing west, Wright and his men were present when Lee finally surrendered three days later at Appomattox.   With the war ending, Wright received orders in June to take command of the Department of Texas.   Remaining until August 1866, he then left volunteer service the following month and reverted to his peacetime rank of lieutenant colonel in the engineers. Horatio Wright - Later Life: Serving in the engineers for the remainder of his career, Wright received a promotion to colonel in March 1879.   Later that year, he was appointed Chief of Engineers with the rank of brigadier general and succeeded Brigadier General Andrew A. Our search of our mother’s garden may end back to ourselves. Walker builds up her argument by mentioning the experiences of other people in the essay. One of them is Jean Toomer, a poet in the early 1920s. He is a man who observed that Black women are unique because they possessed intense spirituality in them, even though their bodies endure every aspect of punishment in every single day of their lives. They were in the strictest sense Saints – crazy, pitiful saints. Walker points out that without a doubt, our mothers and grandmothers belong to this type of people. By building up on the observations of Toomer, she was somehow able to show how hard it was to be a mother or a grandmother or even just a woman at that time, one reason perhaps is that they are black. The mothers and grandmothers at that time endured all of this without any hope that tomorrow will be different, be better. Because of this, they were not able to fully express themselves. They were held back by their society. Another black character that she used to build her argument is Phillis Wheatley, a Black slave girl with a precarious health. Phillis is a poet and a writer at her own right, but unfortunately, she wasn’t able to do much with it because she was a slave. She didn’t have anything for herself, worse, she didn’t even own herself. Her futile attempts for self expression would be washed up by forced labor and pregnancies. She lost her health, and eventually her life without fully expressing herself through her gift for poetry. Alice Walker used the story of Phillis to establish the understanding that indeed, African American women at that time were not allowed or didn’t have the luxury of time to exercise their gifts, to hone their talents and abilities, and use them to fully express themselves. By doing so, Walker proves that our mothers and grandmothers lived a boxed life back then, with no way to channel to them emotions and thoughts other than hard labor and forced servitude. She pointed out that we wouldn’t know if anyone of them would’ve bloomed to be poets, singers, actresses, because they never really had the chance to know what they can do. By building up her argument using these two accounts, she is also presenting very strong evidence to her claim. These accounts were personal experiences of real African American people, and these are not just isolated cases. These are shared experiences not just by these two but by all of their people. Walker can confidently say that there is a lot of Phillis Wheatley in those times, perhaps including her mother and grandmothers. This is concrete evidence because it is not fictional, it is not imaginary, or something conceived out of Walker’s creativity. Slavery, forced pregnancies, poverty, and artistic suppression were the realities during the time of our grandmothers. No one can deny this, and no one can deny the existence of Phillis or the accounts of Jean Toomer. Considering Alice Walker’s authority in her arguments, she could be considered as an expert, a reliable source of information on the topic. First off, she is an African American woman, who had her fair share of poverty in her childhood. She was born and raised by hardworking parents, who really had to work day and night to provide for their family. Also, she witnesses first hand that even though her mother may not be a poet or a novelist; she was an artist in the truest sense. Her artistic side is manifested in her gardens and the beautiful flowers that she grows. Alice Walker witnessed all of this, experienced first hand what it was like to be poor and seemingly talentless. The accounts that Alice Walker used to prove her points and back up her arguments were African American history that she was all too familiar with. It may have been shared to her by her families, or simply a collective knowledge passed down from one generation to another. She is also well-educated, a wide reader, and an artist. She often cites Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own, relating a white woman’s plight to a black woman’s hardships. She emphasizes that even though she recognizes Woolf’s point about society’s unfair treatment to women of her time, Walker still believes that black women suffered the most (Walker). There is simply nothing that could compare to the artistic suppression that her mother and grandmothers experienced. In this essay, she is appealing to a general audience, with no specific race or ethnicity. I think this essay was written to highlight the African American women of her mother and grandmother’s time, who were unable to express their talents and hone it to its full potential. This essay is written to inform anyone and everyone reading it about their stories, and of her discovery of her mother’s garden. She was glad to know that it is possible for African American women to express themselves even unknowingly, that it is up to us to discover these â€Å"gardens.† She is appealing to the readers in general that even though some people like our mothers and grandmothers seem talentless or artistically inferior, it doesn’t mean that they really lack the talent. It just means that were not looking hard enough to find it. Alice Walker’s method of using personal experience and historical accounts allow her to truthfully see and say what has really happened. She doesn’t have to make up hypothetical events because she already has a basis for her arguments. Jean Toomer’s recollections and Phillis Wheatley’s experiences are enough proof of her argument. If some people would disagree with what she’s saying, she can always go back to their experiences, to how Phillis suffered without fully using her gift, or what Toomer saw in the streets in the early Twenties. But because of this, I think Walker is somehow limited to the sad and pitiful stories of the past. Well, in reality, most of the stories of African Americans were really sad and pitiful, but still, Walker failed to mention of any successful artist who rose from the ranks of slaves to write her own story. It is either this kind of story really didn’t exist at that time, or Walker just didn’t mention it, since it wasn’t the focus of her essay. Alice Walker concluded her essay by saying that Phillis Wheatley’s mother was also an artist, and that the achievements of their daughters were in some way brought about by their mothers. Her conclusion states that the mother is somehow responsible in every achievement of their daughter. Any artistic output by a person is also a product of their mother. Indeed, their children are their best creations, their very own wonderful gardens. This conclusion is related to her method because it goes back to how Phillis Wheatley’s mother was somehow responsible for her daughter’s artistic sense, and that beyond the poverty and the hardships that our mothers and grandmothers experienced during their times, they were still able to artistically express themselves through their children, their very own wonderful gardens. Moreover it is not clear from the study that whether the subjects were suffering from anxiety disorders or not before the start of the meditation. It is also not clear that whether the subjects used any other medications at the time of testing the Buddhist meditations. The selection criteria of the subjects are also not evident from the study.
